It may soon be a crime to be homeless within 500 feet of Los Angeles schools and daycare facilities.

In an 11-3 vote, the L.A. City Council on Tuesday approved a law that bans sitting, sleeping or camping near the city’s 750 public and private schools. A second vote is expected later this week to make the new law official, the council has announced.

The approval came in spite of protests by homeless advocates, who say the measure makes homelessness a crime. However, school district official Martha Alvarez says the county’s homeless camps “are unsafe and traumatic for students, families and staff as they enter school campuses.”
